Tabloid Rhetoric in the Wall Street Journal & New York Times

Apple Readies Verizon iPhone

Apple to Offer iPhone on Verizon

The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times have  both reported that the iPhone will be available on Verizon.  After being ratified as newsworthy, this story was repeated in a hand full of other newspapers and tech blogs.  While the title of these articles denotes this report as a fact, the body of the article relies heavily on connotation.  The Wall Street Journal’s “according to people familiar with the matter”, and the New York Times’ “person who is in direct contact with Apple”, are not dissimilar from the anonymous  source common in the tabloids.

“AT&T Inc. is about to lose it’s lock on the iPhone” isn’t a far stretch from “Lovely Lisa’s Scot the lot!”
